More about David Trousselle

The wine world is small and close knit. One of the best ways to discover what’s new is to ask your favorite growers who they’re excited about.

Meursault superstar Pierre Boisson gave our friends at Polaner Selections just such a tip: David Trousselle. Trousselle farms Boisson’s parcel in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune and Pierre raved about his work in the vines as well as the quality of the wines Trousselle makes at his family domaine.

And we are so glad he did. Trousselle’s wines aren't just among our most compelling, utterly delicious Burgundies we've come across in ages -- they're also unbelievable values.

High up in the hamlet of Orches, in a cool pocket between St. Aubin and St. Romain, Trousselle is organically farming a collection of old vines of Aligoté, Chardonnay, Gamay and Pinot Noir situated on limestone rich soils that his father planted in the early '80s. At the time, these out of the way terroirs struggled for ripeness. But with global warming they're now in a real climatic sweet spot, giving wines of supple, crunchy fruit with exhilarating tension, freshness and chalky mineral grip.

David is a minimalist in the cellar. All fermentations are natural and the wines rest in older oak barrels. The wines are hard to resist young but would absolutely improve with a few years aging in a cold cellar. We would recommend grabbing some bottles to drink now as well as a few to stash away.

In a region so steeped in history and hierarchy, these incredible values on the edges of Burgundy from growers like Trousselle beg the question: are these humble vineyards the grand terroirs of the future?

Well, that remains to be seen. But there's already no doubt that these wines deliver the goods, with value that is simply outstanding.
