Forty years on, a 1985 Gravelly Meadow is a rare chance to see what a pioneering California single-vineyard Cabernet does with real time in bottle. Al and Boots Brounstein founded Diamond Creek in 1968. Planting Bordeaux varieties on remote Diamond Mountain went against the thinking of the day, and the estate is made up of four distinct vineyards, each with its own microclimate and soil. Gravelly Meadow was planted that first year: about five acres of flat, prehistoric riverbed at 550 feet, with porous brown soil full of small stones and river rocks. It drains so quickly that the vines have to struggle for water. It's also one of the cooler spots on the property. It's usually the first Diamond Creek Cabernet poured in a line-up. Aged single-vineyard California Cabernet doesn't turn up often, and this bottle is for someone who wants to taste a place rather than just talk about it. As with any wine this age, stand it upright a day ahead and decant it gently.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Expect Gravelly Meadow's house style: currant, plum and ripe blackberry over freshly tilled earth, with fine, elegant tannins and a long, mineral finish. With bottle age, Cabernet of this kind typically softens and takes on cedar, tobacco and leather notes. Think the restraint of classic Bordeaux rather than a plush, modern California Cabernet.
