Domaine Ciringa Fosilni Breg Sauvignon Blanc 2023

$2599

Armin Tement likes to say that Sauvignon Blanc grown on this soil doesn't really taste like Sauvignon Blanc, and he is right. Fosilni Breg means fossil hill, and the vineyard is a steep, south-facing wall of 60-million-year-old limestone reef, an ancient seabed with the Slovenia-Austria border running straight through it. It is essentially the same rock as Chablis, just younger. The Tements farm it organically and biodynamically, ferment spontaneously in large old casks from a single Carinthian cooper, then age the wine a full year on its lees in wood and another in steel before bottling unfined and unfiltered. What comes out is built on structure and salt rather than grapefruit and cut grass. If your idea of the grape stops at New Zealand, this will rearrange it.

"The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Fosilni Breg is remarkably pretty, with a whiff of sweet mint and lemon zest giving way to green melon. It is intensely mineral-driven, with a sour lime twang exciting a core of green apple. The palate is squeaky clean, resonating with a subtle saline tone. Sauvignon Blanc fans should seek this out." —Eric Guido

"Aged for 18 months in large oak casks and scheduled to be bottled in later April 2025, the still-cloudy sample 2023 Fosilni Breg Sauvignon Blanc comes from the Slovenian part of the Zieregg, where the vines were planted by Armin Tement in 2006 with own massal selections and different rootstocks adapted to the five different terroirs of the long rows climbing from around 300 up to almost 500 meters above altitude. The wine offers a clear, aromatic and generous but elegant and juicy bouquet of yellow fruits and flowers intermingled with saline and lemony notes. Round, refined and very elegant on the palate, thanks to the humous brown earth terroir, this is an irresistible, elegant, refined, savory and lemon-bitter Sauvignon Blanc with fine tannins and a long, lemon-flavored finish. This is a gorgeous wine with an open-hearted character. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in April 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt
