Domaine Genot-Boulanger Pommard 1er Cru Clos Blanc 2016

$14999

Génot-Boulanger is one of Burgundy's elusive, under-the-radar producers, with Aude and Guillaume Lavollée farming organically (with biodynamic influence) and working every parcel by horse-drawn plough. New oak is capped at 15%. Their 1er Cru Clos Blanc sits on the northern edge of Pommard near the Beaune border, where pale limestone and clay produce a finer, more elegant style than Pommard's usual broad shoulders. The 2016 is the cool, elegant edition: a vintage shaped by frost-reduced yields but with great freshness and lift. Expect fragrant red fruit, fine tannins, and the kind of long, energetic finish that defines the house style.

"The 2016 Pommard Clos Blanc 1er Cru is paler in colour than its peers. The bouquet is forward and open-knit, missing some cohesion perhaps, smudged red berry fruit mixed with damp undergrowth and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy and quite dry tannin, firm in the mouth but it feels just a tad clumsy towards the finish. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine Genot-Boulanger

Genot-Boulanger is run by Aude and Guillaume Lavollée. He broke a 20 generation run as pharmacists by purchasing some vines in Mercurey, and then Meursault; her long-established Burgundian family (the Genots and the Boulangers) gave the estate its name. They’ve spent the last decade reinvigorating the estate’s soils, converting the farming to organic (with some biodynamic influence) and encouraging healthy biodiversity of plants, animals and microbes.

At Genot-Boulanger, the focus is on freshness and terroir expression. Fruit is harvested before it comes overly ripe, to preserve acidity, and each site is worked painstakingly (often with a horse-drawn plough). In the cellar, new oak is limited to a maximum of 15%.
