Village Chambolle from a grower who bottles eleven separate premier crus and owns no grand cru, which tells you exactly where her attention goes: this one commune, parcel by parcel. Ghislaine Barthod builds her village wine from nine tiny parcels spread across the appellation, on Chambolle's spare soil of limestone gravel over a very thin layer of topsoil. That soil is why Chambolle is known for finesse and delicacy rather than the heft of Morey or Gevrey. Her humble Bourgogne Rouge gets the same care as her premier crus and has fooled experienced tasters into guessing a grander wine, so think of this as the accessible way into one of the commune's most serious cellars. In 2023 the huge crop had to be thinned hard, the summer stayed cool, and picking came quickly in early-September heat; Barthod's fruit came in clean and floral, with no overripeness. One bit of family lore: in the early 1980s her father Gaston labelled only Les Charmes as premier cru, sold everything else as plain Chambolle-Musigny, and marked his first shipments of Les Cras and Les Fuées in crayon with a "C" or an "F".

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels, seared duck breast with a cherry jus, mushroom risotto, jambon persillé, or a mild washed-rind cheese like Reblochon.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Chambolle profile: red cherry, raspberry and violet aromas with a hint of earthy spice. The palate is typically light to medium-bodied and silky, with fine, gentle tannins and lively acidity, finishing dry, fresh and perfumed. Think of it as Burgundy's more delicate side, lacier and more fragrant than a sturdier Gevrey-Chambertin.
