Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans 2021 (1.5L)

$49999

From the importer: Made from 3.98 hectares in the Champans climat, located just north of the Caillerets. Two parallel plots constitute their part of the appellation (11 hectares in total). They extend from top to bottom of the Champans and hillside climate, thus taking advantage of all the characteristics of this remarkable south-east facing terroir, located in the center of the Volnay Premiers Crus. The soil is poorer and sits on a rocky limestone bench at the top of the hill as the slope tapers down and it becomes more clayey, stony and deeper.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru belts out of the glass with blackberry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas, the most vigorous of the Premier Crus at this juncture. Wonderful definition. The palate is harmonious, poised, and demonstrates more substance than the other crus with a slightly confit finish that lingers seductively. This could age magnificently - a victory in a challenging growing season that deserves a hearty applause." —Vinous

"The 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Champans is one of the standouts of the range this year, mingling aromas of dark berries and orange zest with notions of Indian spices and rose petals in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, supple and sensual, with good concentration and an ample, fleshy mid-palate, it concludes with a floral finish." —Robert Parker

"With its charming plummy fruit accented with notes of spice, smoke, and a savoury element, this is nearly always among my favorite wines at d'Angerville. The 2021 version has charm, a bit more density, and a better length than other offerings here; with a lovely intensity and lingering finish, it is an elegant expression of the dedication to quality here."

More about Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

The Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is one of the most storied in Burgundy with roots going back over 500 years. They were among the very first to estate bottle their own wine. But over the past 2 decades Guillaume d'Angerville, grandson of the Marquis, has grown a very good estate into one of the greatest into the Cote d'Or.

Along with peers Michel Lafarge and Hubert de Montille, Guillaume helped turn Volnay into one of the most prized villages despite it's lack of Grand Crus. Sadly Michel and Hubert are no longer with us, but Guillaume, who's a bit younger, is as energetic as a schoolboy. He's expanded into the Jura after purchasing the vineyards of Jacques Puffeney and likely has other projects in the works.
