Domaine Mee Godard Morgon Grand Cras 2023

$5699

Grand Cras soils—alluvial and sandy—are very similar to those of Corcelette at the foot of the Côte du Py, also facing southeast. While many of Godard's wines can feel tight and locked up when young, ready for the long haul, here the sandy soils allow for softer tannins and a sun-drenched fruit bowl ready to enjoy now while you wait for the rest. Although with so much fresh-picked strawberry and blueberry, perfumed roses, bright violets, spicy incense, potted earth, and Morgon's quintessential licorice note, there's runway for further development down the road.

Grand Cras 2023 captures the joie de vivre of Beaujolais along with an ability to age in the mid-term. The effusive florals, crunchy fruit, tingling acidity, and closely knit velvety tannins melt in your mouth. Drink this one now and love your life.

"The 2023 Morgon Grand Cras is often one of Godard's strongest cards in her pack, though this vintage, I find a couple of other cuvées have the edge over it. All the same, the bouquet offers delectable blackberry, raspberry and dried violet petal aromas that gradually blossom in the glass. It certainly does not have the vigor of the 2022, yet this is very well delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety texture, impressive depth for this vintage and just a hint of white pepper and Szechuan pepper tingling on the aftertaste. This comes recommended." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine Mee Godard

Mee came to Beaujolais and started her domaine in the 2013 vintage. Imagine if someone came out of nowhere to create a new domaine in Gevrey-Chambertin and managed to start with parcels of Clos St. Jacques, Chambertin, and Clos de Bèze. Impossible! But that’s exactly what Mee did in Morgon, acquiring parcels in the three great crus of the village: Corcelette, Côte du Py, and Grand Cras.

The reason she could do this, of course, is money. Top Beaujolais costs about €30,000 per hectare. As Jon Bonné has pointed out in Punch magazine, even lowly Savigny-lès-Beaune in Burgundy commands a price around ten times that. (We're not aware of any recent trades but a hectare of Chambertin would no doubt cost many millions of euros.)

Of course, we don't love Mee just because she managed to acquire some prime parcels; her winemaking is stellar and takes full advantage of her terroir. Beaujolais producers usually find themselves making a choice. Do they use carbonic maceration and low-extraction techniques to produce easy-drinking quaffers? Or do they use a more Burgundian style of winemaking to produce structured wines that can be aged?

Mee Godard opts for a middle approach. She does some carbonic fermentation, some traditional fermentation, and then blends them together. Her wines are definitely delicious on release, and we are pretty sure they'll age well, too—her oldest wines are 2013s, so this hasn't really been put to the test yet.
