This is the flagship Chardonnay from the Oregon house that took white wine seriously enough to build it a home of its own. A little over ten years after they started, Domaine Serene finished a separate winery just for Chardonnay and sparkling wine, the first of its kind in Oregon. Grace and Ken Evenstad came to the Willamette Valley in 1989 with Burgundy in mind and bought a 42-acre hilltop estate in the Dundee Hills. The Evenstad Reserve sits at the top of their Chardonnay range. It's a blend of select barrels from their Dundee Hills sites, and it relies on a mix of clones and sites so it stays consistent from year to year. The house credits Dijon clones, Jory soil and the height of its hillside estates for the quality of the fruit. Domestic Chardonnay this ambitious usually gets drunk young, so a 2014 is a good chance to see what Oregon's Burgundy-minded whites do with some time in bottle.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Dungeness crab with brown butter; roast chicken with morels and cream; halibut with beurre blanc; lobster risotto; aged Gruyère or Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the Burgundy-minded Dundee Hills style: lemon, ripe pear and yellow apple with hazelnut and gentle toast from barrel ageing, over a medium-to-full, creamy texture. Oregon's cool climate typically keeps the acidity bright and lifted. Think closer to a Meursault than a buttery California Chardonnay, finishing dry, long and quietly savoury.
