What is this wine?

Sylvain Pataille, based in Marsannay, is one of Burgundy’s most respected vignerons, celebrated for his meticulous organic and biodynamic farming and sensitive, low-intervention winemaking. Though best known for his reds, Pataille is also one of the modern masters of Aligoté, a grape he has helped restore to serious status in Burgundy.
The Bouzeron 2022 comes from old Aligoté Doré vines planted on limestone-rich slopes in Bouzeron, the only appellation in Burgundy dedicated solely to this variety. The fruit is hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts, and aged in mostly used oak barrels to enhance texture while preserving freshness.

Why get this wine?

This is benchmark Aligoté, offering depth and precision far beyond its humble appellation. Pataille’s touch brings tension, minerality, and length worthy of fine white Burgundy. The 2022 vintage adds ripe fruit and supple texture, making this both a thrilling aperitif wine and a versatile food companion.

What does this wine taste like?

Bright and expressive, with lemon zest, green apple, white flowers, and chalky minerality. The palate is vivid and saline, with a silky texture and lingering citrus finish.

When should you drink this wine?

Enjoy now through 2028. Serve well-chilled alongside oysters, goat cheese, grilled fish, or spring vegetables.

Sylvain Pataille is one of those rare vignerons whose hard work and dedication has elevated the overall quality and public perception of the wines in his village. Sylvain, and his brother Laurent, now farm 15 hectares of vineyards located exclusively in Marsannay. They have been pushing hard to designate some of the special terroir there as 1er Cru, and it will likely happen soon. When you shake Sylvain's hands you are reminded that these are hands that work really hard! They are rough as sandpaper because he is out in the vineyards 11 months of the year. Sylvain is also a very talented chemist who so excelled at his classes in Bordeaux that he in the consulting enologist at 15 or so great domaines in Burgundy including Domaine Roumier in Chambolle-Musigny and Château de la Tour in Clos Vougeot. He is very passionate and devoted to his domaine in Marsannay which he built from nothing. His first vintage was in 1999. Like Bruno Clair he is an indefatigable champion of the village of Marsannay.

Sylvain has been organically certified since 2008, and has been employing biodynamics in the vineyards and cellar for over a decade. With the exception of small amounts of sulphur when needed, there are no additions whatsoever. His wines are both “natural” and completely classic . . . black magic!

Burghound

"A wonderfully fresh and bright nose is also very aligoté in character with its aromas of green apple, spice, lemon-lime and discreet floral influences. The almost painfully intense middle weight flavors exude evident minerality on the bone-dry and markedly austere finish that displays some of the best persistence in the range. I would note thought that this is sufficiently dry and austere that it may not appeal to all palates.*Burghound Outstanding!*"

"The 2022 Bouzeron Blanc comes from purchased fruit. It has quite a phenolic bouquet, melted candle wax and light tangerine notes emerging with time. The palate has pronounced acidity on the entry, very citrusy, segueing into a finish that offers a dab of curry leaf (in fact, I can imagine drinking this with a curry)." -Neal Martin
