Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Rouge Belle Dame 2023

$9699

The most convincing argument going that Sancerre's future is as red as it is white. Belle Dame is Vacheron's flagship Pinot Noir, from a single parcel of pure flint — silex — planted to vines around fifty years old, and it was the family's first single-vineyard bottling when it debuted in 1995. Roughly a quarter of the estate is given over to Pinot Noir, which is less an eccentricity than a restoration: before phylloxera, red was a far bigger deal here than it is today. Hand-harvested and fermented on native yeasts in upright wooden casks, it spends eighteen months in French oak and goes into bottle with no fining and no filtration. 2023 was a ripe year in the Centre-Loire, with a dry late summer and September rain to finish maturity, and the reds came in with real flesh — give this a few years in the cellar, or decant it hard if you're opening it tonight.

More about Domaine Vacheron

Vacheron is run by two cousins: Jean-Dominique and Jean-Laurent. They've pushed the quality in recent years, converting to biodynamic farming while adding to their portfolio of single-vineyard bottlings. Burgundy is clearly the model for these two, and their best wines operate on a Grand Cru-like level.

The main attractions are their single-vineyard cuvées, which showcase the patchwork of terroir surrounding the town of Sancerre itself. While these wines all posses fascinating differences, they share the Vacheron hallmarks of needle-point precision and an almost overwhelming expression of minerality. They are elegant and age-worthy.

To taste the single-vineyard cuvées of Domaine Vacheron is to experience Sancerre at its absolute apogee – perhaps that of Sauvignon Blanc, too. There are other great producers in the region (the cousins Cotat come to mind, for example), but none explore the fascinating variations of terroir so consistently and convincingly as Vacheron.
