Domaines Ott Bandol Rose Chateau Romassan 2023

$4999

If you've ever spotted an Ott bottle across a restaurant, you spotted the flute first. The tall, tapered silhouette, designed in the early 20th century and inspired by Provence's cypress trees, has been the Ott family's signature since the 1930s and is now an unofficial icon of Provencal rose. Chateau Romassan is their Bandol estate, where Mourvedre takes the lead and the rose gains weight, spice, and aging potential beyond the usual Provence sip. The 2023 is peach-hued with citrus, melon, lemon verbena, and a salty, crunchy mineral finish. Serious rose in a serious bottle.

"The 2023 Rosé Château Romassan captivates with a bouquet that mixes savory and sweet, as nuances of D'Anjou pear and lime zest combine with spring flowers, ginger and green melon. This is vividly fruit-focused within, with cooling acidity and silken textures, coming across as lifted and refined yet also potent. Its minerality shines through the finish, crisp, nearly crunchy and long with a spicy tinge that pinches at the palate. Complexity and shear depth make the Chateau Romassan impossible to ignore." —Eric Guido

"This illustrates just how different the Mourvèdre-based rosés of this coastal appellation can be, in comparison to rosés from the rest of Provence. Delicately pale salmon pink. Restrained aromas of bruised peach, garrigue and barely ripe apricots. The Mourvèdre shines here with concentration, sour lemon acidity and creamy, ripe, sweet black fruit. There is fine-grained minerality leading to linear austerity and a mouthwatering finish."

"A reminder of Bandol's superiority when it comes to rosé. Crushed stone minerality grounds this fresh, alluring version, with notes of dried lavender and salted herbs alongside mandarin acidity. This well-meshed version sings in harmony from start to vibrant finish. Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Grenache."
