Elvio Cogno Barbera D'Alba Bricco dei Merli 2021

$3899

Bright ruby red in color with clear crimson highlights. Deep, fully perfumed, elegant and well-balanced with reminiscent of roses, undergrowth, wild berries and oriental spices. A powerful bouquet, sweetened by overall softness. Fine structure accompanied by vibrant freshness. Flavors evoke Morello cherries and plum jam with a long finish of raisins.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Barbera d'Alba Bricco dei Merli opens with a burst of succulent dark red cherry, plum, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and spice. Overall, I find the 2021 compact and a touch abrupt within the context of the year, especially on the finish. This is a good wine in a great vintage for Barbera." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2021 Barbera d'Alba Bricco dei Merli (with 10,000 bottles produced) shows a beautifully fruity, almost juicy personality that paints an authentic portrait of this grape. The Congo winemaking team has worked out its approach to elegant wines. This Barbera does not show any of the excesses, like sourness or too much acidity, that can sometimes characterize Barbera when made in less capable hands." —Monica Larner

"From 60- to 70-year-old vines, this is intensely perfumed, with spicy aromas and a juicy, saline mouthful of black and red berries. Concentrated yet fresh, it plays to the variety's drinkability. Twelve months in Slavonian oak casks."

"This Barbera lifts from the glass with fresh aromas of mixed berries, sweet spices, wild herbs and underbrush. The juicy palate gives notes of black cherries, raspberries and tea finishing with bright acidity." —Jeff Porter

More about Elvio Cogno

We have been excited about Cogno's wines for many years. With the most recent of vintages, Elvio Cogno has reached the pinnacle of greatness. The domaine can now join a small handful of producers in Barolo that we can truly call elite.

This was inevitable. Cogno was founded by Elvio Cogno in 1990 after he left Marcarini, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in Piedmont. Since then, he (together with his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore) has been making very traditional-style Barolos in the village of Novello, and especially its top Cru, Ravera.

If you’re unfamiliar, Ravera is one of Barolo’s most distinctive sites. Set on limestone-rich soils at high elevation, it produces wines that manage to be both powerful and elegant. The structure is there, always—but so is the lift, the perfume, the feeling that you’re tasting Nebbiolo shaped by cool light and ancient earth. And with 70-year-old vines, much of Cogno’s fruit offers a level of concentration that’s hard to match.
