Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice 2019

$17999

Ruby to garnet red in color. Intense notes of violet accompanied by a hint of damp soil, ripe red fruit and subtle spiciness. Harmonious and well-structured on the palate with incisive yet fine, soft tannins. Already elegant and alluring when young, its silkiness and, above all, its complexity allow to age as only great wines know how. All Lampia Nebbiolo.

Robert Parker

95 points

"The Elvio Cogno 2019 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice starts off with earthy notes, with the fruity ones pouring in a little later. You get potting soil, bow resin, a hint of petroleum, blue bells and mountain flowers. Fruit-wise, there is plenty of plum and blackcurrant. There is an almost green tone of rhubarb or cruciferous vegetable. The Bricco Pernice cleans up in the mouth, with super grippy tannins that need more bottle age. Only 5,000 bottles were made." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

"Brilliant medium ruby red with orange-coloured reflections. A breathtaking, multi-layered and complex bouquet with raspberry fruit, salty, mineral notes and a hint of leather. Compact but lush, juicy cherry and raspberry fruit, which develops slowly, and long, grainy, tangible tannins. Mouth-filling, but by no means heavy."

Wine Spectator

96 points

"Cherry, plum, tar, tobacco and wild herb flavours permeate this muscular red wine, which is rather austere today, not showing much fruit and has a dense base of powerful tannins. The super-long, ferrous finish shows the future potential of this wine, so keep your hands off it for now."

Wine Enthusiast

94 points

"Wild berries and a profusion of drying flowers leap from the glass of this Barolo. The palate is substantial with an enticing spiciness and core of juicy mixed wild berries that endear one to the wine. Despite its youth and the present tannins this Bricco Pernice is already delicious with a suppleness that is welcomed but do not fret, this wine will go the distance." —Jeff Porter

"You could spend all day just taking in the multifaceted aromas on the stunning Bricco Pernice from Elvio Cogno that include forest floor, crushed mint, new leather, cake spice and blue flower. Smooth and full-bodied, the delicious palate delivers ripe Morello cherry, raspberry compote, cinnamon, licorice and a dollop of vanilla accompanied by a backbone of velvety, fine-grained tannins. A stunning wine that while already so tempting, will be even better in a few years." —Kerin O’Keefe

More about Elvio Cogno

We have been excited about Cogno's wines for many years. With the most recent of vintages, Elvio Cogno has reached the pinnacle of greatness. The domaine can now join a small handful of producers in Barolo that we can truly call elite.

This was inevitable. Cogno was founded by Elvio Cogno in 1990 after he left Marcarini, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in Piedmont. Since then, he (together with his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore) has been making very traditional-style Barolos in the village of Novello, and especially its top Cru, Ravera.

If you’re unfamiliar, Ravera is one of Barolo’s most distinctive sites. Set on limestone-rich soils at high elevation, it produces wines that manage to be both powerful and elegant. The structure is there, always—but so is the lift, the perfume, the feeling that you’re tasting Nebbiolo shaped by cool light and ancient earth. And with 70-year-old vines, much of Cogno’s fruit offers a level of concentration that’s hard to match.
