A 375ml bottle of Fonseca's 2000 Vintage Port is a sensible way into serious Vintage Port: two or three people can finish it in one evening, with no leftover bottle to worry about. The 2000 season in the Douro swung between extremes. Half the year's rain fell in April and May, then the summer turned dry, and the first half of August was extremely hot. Long warm days in late August and early September followed, and Fonseca's wines came out very full-bodied, deeply coloured and highly aromatic. The house releases a Vintage Port only in years it judges outstanding and built for long ageing. The blend comes from its own estates: Cruzeiro and Santo António in the Pinhão valley, which have gone into Fonseca's Vintage Port for a century, and Panascal in the Távora valley. Here's a piece of trivia: every Fonseca Vintage Port except the 1955 was made by one of three members of the Guimaraens family. Stand the bottle upright for a few hours so the sediment settles, decant it slowly and serve it at 16–18ºC.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Stilton or Roquefort with toasted walnuts; dried figs or apricots; a fig and walnut tart; or simply on its own after dinner.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Fonseca Vintage Port profile: ripe blackberry, cassis and plum with hints of violet and dark chocolate, sweet and very full-bodied with a dense, velvety texture. Firm tannins and fresh acidity keep that richness in check. With bottle age the fruit typically softens toward dried fig and spice, finishing long and warming.
