If you're tired of Napa Cabernet that shouts, Forman is the quiet fix: a house known for elegance, balance and restraint, where harmony, fine tannins and graceful ageing matter more than sheer power. That Old World approach comes straight from Ric Forman. Bordeaux shaped him early, he has more than 60 years of winemaking behind him, and he's a true Napa pioneer. He founded Forman Vineyard in 1983 as a sole proprietor, and he still oversees every step himself. The home ground is a ridge at the base of Howell Mountain, looking down on St. Helena. The largest vineyard sits on gravel and sand left by a three-million-year-old riverbed. The steep plot above the winery is volcanic rock so dense it had to be dynamited before anything could be planted. Each of the estate's three parcels grows all four Bordeaux varieties, which tells you exactly which side of the Atlantic Ric has his eye on. This is a Napa Cabernet for people who want polish and age-worthiness rather than brute force.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon turned out beautifully. Rich and generous, with lovely up-front fruit, the 2022 is a pretty forward wine for Ric Forman, but it also offers tons of immediacy. Plush contours add to its overall appeal. Harvest wrapped up on September 20, on the later side for the year." —Antonio Galloni

More about Forman

Ric Forman has been making wines like that for over 30 years from his property at the base of Howell Mountain. We know from talking Chablis and Chianti with Ric that he's as much inspired by the Old World's great wines as by California's great opportunities. His Cabernets have true California fruit, but something else too—some of the magic of the greatest of Old World wines.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Dry-aged ribeye or bone-in strip steak; roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic; seared duck breast with a cherry or red-wine reduction; braised short ribs; wild mushroom risotto finished with aged Parmigiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect a restrained, classically styled Napa Cabernet: blackcurrant, dark cherry, cedar and a hint of graphite rather than jammy ripeness. Typically medium- to full-bodied with fresh acidity and fine, polished tannins (think Left Bank Bordeaux more than blockbuster Napa), it finishes long and dry and is built to age gracefully.
