Gamet Champagne Blanc de Noirs Brut Nature Carres du Midi 2019

$8499

North-facing vineyards used to be a liability in Champagne. In a warming region they have quietly become an asset, and Carres du Midi is the argument: one north-facing parcel in the village of Mardeuil, in the Marne Valley, planted to Pinot Noir back in 1969 and farmed by Marianne Gamet, the fourth generation here. Slower ripening means more tension, and Gamet doesn't sand any of it down - the wine is fermented and aged in demi-muids, spends 36 months on the lees, and goes out at zero dosage, with no sugar to hide behind. What you get is a Blanc de Noirs with genuine weight and a chalky, savory core, closer to a serious still white with bubbles than to an aperitif fizz. Grower Champagne for people who want the Pinot Noir to actually taste like Pinot Noir.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2019 Brut Nature Carres du Midi is 100% Pinot Noir from vines in Mardeuil. Rich, creamy and ample in the glass, the 2019 is immediately captivating. Vinification and aging in oak exalts the breadth of Pinot Noir in this vintage. Even so, the 2019 retains terrific freshness. Kirsch, plum, white flowers, chalk and white pepper open with some coaxing. This is such a gorgeous and complete Champagne. Zero dosage."

Wine Spectator

"A core of black cherry and raspberry fruit and a rich hint of toasted brioche is spiced with anise, graphite and cardamom. It's a warm thread of flavor counterpointed with bright acidity and notes of blood orange peel and minerally chalk and salt. Lightly textured, with a raw silk feel to the mousse as it carries the profile on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2035."

More about Gamet

Two families have come together from either side of the Marne river find a deeper understanding of their terroir. Not only are they growing grapes, they focus on farming other food crops, cider making, and keeping the protection of their cherished environment above all else.

The wines are fresh and appealing, light on their feet with nice textural elements and great complexity for the price. This is thanks to having a lot of land with a wide variation in exposition, elevation and soil type, and all three grapes. They can craft delicious bottles of bubbles out of their cellar in Côte sud d'Epernay, and we are happy to offer them here first.
