The Symington family, who run Graham's, count their 1994 among the best Vintage Ports of the 20th century and compare it to the legendary Graham's 1970. From this house, that is about as high as praise gets. Graham's is one of the grand old houses of the Douro, and Vintage Port is the top of the pyramid: a fortified red made only in exceptional years from the finest parcels on the estates, then bottled young so it can age for decades. The 1994 comes from two properties. One is Quinta dos Malvedos, the cornerstone of Graham's Vintage Ports since 1890, with south-facing dry-stone terraces built by hand in the 18th century where the Cima Corgo meets the Douro Superior. The other is Quinta das Lages in the Rio Torto valley. A soaking winter in 1993/94 refilled the groundwater after a run of very dry years, and harvest at Malvedos began on 21 September with the grapes in excellent condition. The family then spent 18 months assessing the wines before declaring the vintage and bottling in 1996. Vintage Port throws a heavy sediment, so decant it carefully off the deposit, then settle in for a slow evening (an opened bottle keeps for two to three days).

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Stilton or Roquefort, chocolate mousse, hazelnut mille-feuille, or a plate of walnuts and dried figs after dinner.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Graham's Vintage Port style, typically one of the richer, sweeter houses: ripe blackberry, plum and blackcurrant with violet, liquorice and spice, and dried fig and cocoa notes as it ages in bottle. It is full-bodied and plush, with firm tannins that soften slowly over the decades, and a long, sweet, warming finish.
