Graham's ranks 1994 among the very best vintages of the 20th century and one of its finest Vintage Ports since World War II. Here it comes in 375ml, a sensible size for opening a Port of this stature without making a whole occasion of it. The call to declare came fast: 1994 was Charles Symington's first Douro harvest, working alongside his father Peter, and he says these were the first wines his father ever asked him to appraise. He also says declaring them was one of the quickest decisions of his career. The fruit came from Quinta dos Malvedos, Graham's flagship vineyard in the Cima Corgo, and from Quinta das Lages in the Rio Torto Valley, where it was trodden in traditional lagares. A cool, wet May cut the crop considerably, but the grapes that made it to harvest were remarkably even in quality. The house compares this wine to the legendary Graham's 1970, which tells you what they think of it. Decant it carefully off the natural sediment; what you don't finish keeps for two or three days.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Stilton or another strong blue cheese, chocolate mousse, hazelnut mille-feuille, a dark chocolate torte, or a plate of shelled walnuts after dinner.

Tasting Profile

Expect the rich, ripe Graham's house style: blackberry, plum and cassis layered with dark chocolate, liquorice and violet, plus the extra sweetness the house is known for. Typically full-bodied and velvety, with firm tannins that soften with bottle age into dried fig, spice and savoury notes, finishing long and warming.
