Grange Saint-Sauveur VdF Chenin Centenaire 2021

$5999

Vines over a hundred years old are the whole story here. Grange Saint-Sauveur was founded in 2017 by Alice Gitton-Pouponneau and Antoine Pouponneau in Le Thoureil, Anjou, right on the Loire. 'Chenin Centenaire' comes from their parcel of century-old Chenin Blanc on a gently sloping clay-limestone hillside, farmed biodynamically, hand-harvested, and fermented with native yeasts. The result is a full-bodied, intense dry Chenin with real raciness and cut -- citrus, pear, and flint over a long, sculpted finish. A characterful, low-intervention Loire white.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2021 Chenin Centenaire is a young pup of a Chenin the tingles and twists across your palate. Clearly oaked with overt flavors of new barrels vanilla meeting pineapple fruit, banana and almond meal. Its tangy natural acidity, reflecting the cooler season, vibrates through its core, providing line and tension - it certainly wakes up your palate when tasted alongside richer, more languid wines of 2020 and 2022. A light to mid-weight style full of concentration, which the 80-100 year-old vines surely played a part in as well as small crops. Needs time to come together. An exciting domaine." —Rebecca Gibb MW
