Six acres on a knoll nobody's heard of, tucked behind a peak that blocks the cold Pacific wind the rest of Oregon takes on the chin. That's Dux -- a small, low-lying Dundee Hills site at around 450 feet, planted in 2011 in classic red Jory soil, sheltered from the Van Duzer Corridor gusts by the hill just to its south. Less wind stress means gentler, more even ripening, and the Pinot that comes off it is perfumed and poised rather than muscular. Jackson Holstein farms it himself; he's a working vineyard manager who grew up in these hills, and his winemaking is deliberately unfussy -- native yeast, a portion of whole clusters, French oak, unfined and unfiltered. The name is Latin for 'leader,' which is a bold claim for a six-acre knoll. Taste it and you'll see the argument.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

More about Granville

We love the European wine-maker. More of a peasant than a businessman, he works among the vines because that is what his family has always done. It’s a stereotype, for sure, but there are definitely a lot of French and Italian wine-makers out there who fit the description.

Then there is the stereotype of the American wine-maker – different, but equally attractive. This wine-maker is a pioneer, an inventor. She experiments. She has an open mind. She may not be born making great wine, but she gets there eventually.

Again, there are certainly many American wine-makers who fit this description. Jackson Holstein is one of them.

His parents were literal pioneers, driving west from Kentucky to Oregon in a pickup truck. They bought ten hectares, and named it Holstein Vineyard. Jackson grew up among those vines. He learned a little vineyard management from his Dad, but he also went to school and he studied. He also traveled the world, worked at various wineries, and side hustled by producing a bit of wine in a garage – it turns out that tech companies are not the only start-ups that happen in American garages.

In 2014, he settled down with his partner Ayla to create a proper winery. There they make very pretty and quietly intense Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from organic and biodynamic sources in the Dundee hills – including the family Holstein Vineyard.
