Groth Cabernet Sauvignon 1986

This is an Oakville Cabernet from before Oakville officially existed. The Cabernet comes from Groth's Oakcross Vineyard in Oakville, but the appellation wasn't created until 1993, and the Groth family were among the growers who pushed for it. That's why the label just says Napa Valley. The wine also dates from the estate's early years: Dennis and Judy Groth bought the property in 1981, and this vintage was made before their mission-style winery was finished in 1990. It's 85% Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakcross and 15% Merlot from the Hillview Vineyard just south of Yountville, both chosen for their mature vines. The year started with a record-breaking flood that did very little damage, followed by an early bud break and a mild, calm summer. The Cabernet was picked clean on October 9, with acid, pH and sugar in balance. It was fermented in stainless steel and then spent 17 months in French oak, at a moderate 13.4% alcohol. For anyone who follows Napa history, it's a rare chance to taste a mature Oakville Cabernet from this family estate's first decade.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Tasting Profile

Expect a classic, moderate-alcohol Napa Cabernet Sauvignon in the Oakville mould: blackcurrant and dark cherry with cedar, tobacco and a touch of dusty earth from French oak ageing. Mature examples typically turn more savoury, with tannins softened into a medium- to full-bodied, silky texture, finishing dry with fresh acidity and a lingering cedary note.
