Purple Egyptian is an ancient landrace barley from the headwaters of the Nile, named for its glassy purple-black kernels, and Palouse Heritage in Washington is essentially the only farm in the United States still growing it. That grain is the entire point. Hanabi is a Napa brewery founded by Nick Gislason, who spent years making wine at Screaming Eagle and wondered what would happen if you thought about barley the way a winemaker thinks about a vineyard site: grain as the lead singer, hops as backup vocals. Brewed as a pilsner-style lager from organically grown fruit of that rare barley, it gives abundant cereal-grain aromatics with dried apricot, clover honey and a lift of sweet mint. Serve it refrigerator-cold, let it warm a few degrees in the glass so the grain starts talking, and drink it fresh: Hanabi's seasonal releases are here and then they aren't.
