What is this wine?
Hidden Treasures “HID3” Balaton 2021 is a dry white wine from Hungary’s Lake Balaton region, a collaboration between Austrian winemaker Roland Velich of Moric and Hungarian grower Bálint Losonci. The “Hidden Treasures” series explores lesser-known Central European terroirs through partnerships with small, quality-focused producers. HID3 comes from volcanic soils near the northern shore of Lake Balaton and is made primarily from Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and aged in large, neutral oak casks.
Why get this wine?
This wine captures the soul of modern Central European winemaking — precise, mineral, and pure, with a sense of place that recalls fine Austrian whites but at outstanding value. The “Hidden Treasures” series has become a cult favorite for its combination of authenticity, freshness, and craftsmanship, and HID3 exemplifies that ethos beautifully.
What does this wine taste like?
Dry, elegant, and textural, with notes of green apple, lemon zest, almond, and crushed stone. The palate is focused and saline, driven by vibrant acidity and volcanic minerality.
When should you drink this wine?
Drink now through 2028. Ideal with freshwater fish, white meats, or Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Serve chilled, but allow it to warm slightly in the glass to show its depth.
