Institut Agricole Regional Aoste Gamay Valle d'Aosta 2018

$2599

Some of the most interesting wine in the Alps comes out of a school. The Institut Agricole Regional in Aosta is a working agricultural college, founded in 1951 by the Canons of the Great St. Bernard to train the valley's farmers, and its Joseph Vaudan cellar turns out serious bottles alongside the coursework. This is Gamay grown in Italy's smallest and highest wine region, which is a very different assignment than growing it in Beaujolais. The mountain version comes out leaner and stonier, light on its feet, with the fruit pulled taut rather than plump. It's a 2018, so a few years of bottle age have already smoothed the edges. Sustainably farmed, genuinely obscure, and worth the detour.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Fontina fondue, prosciutto and cured meats, mushroom risotto, roast pork, or alpine cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Light-bodied and dry. Tart red cherry and cranberry, dried herbs, and a stony edge, with gentle tannins. Fresh and savory rather than plush.
