Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 2021

$6999

The most celebrated site of J.J. Prüm shows its authority in this 2021 Kabinett: a Mosel wine of crystalline purity drawn from Wehlener Sonnenuhr's deep, weathered gray slate soils and extreme 70% slope. The nose reveals lily flowers, lozenge, fine spices, thyme, and minty smoke; the palate delivers vineyard peach, orange blossom, and almond cream with a stimulating, mouth-watering finish. At just 7.5% alcohol, it offers sophistication now yet will flourish for decades.

More about Joh. Jos. Prum

Joh. Jos. Prum is among the very top estates in the Mosel, and many think they are the top. Only Egon Mueller gets that subjective moniker as often as Prum. But whether or not they are the actual number 1, lovers of staunchly old-school Mosel Riesling look to Prum as a standard bearer.

I’ll be the first to admit that “old-school” and “traditional” are a bit overused, and I’m guilty too. It’s not a cliché for Prum though, even though the estate is barely a century old (a baby for German Weinguts), they are not influenced by the ebb and flow of winemaking trends at all. Exhibit A is how Manfred Prum has steadfastly refused to even experiment with dry wines.

Manfred has been joined by his daughter, Dr. Katharina Prum, for the past 2 decades and she is now more or less running the show. Their home and cellar is the world-renowned Wehlener Sonnenur vineyard, where 20 of their 50 hectares of vines lie. A tasting here is one of the wine world's top treats. It's this very steep, south-west facing slope of Devonian gray slate that produces some of the most delicious, most unique and most importantly, long-lived white wines in the world. Part of their magic is the continued use of spontaneous fermentation, giving the wines a signature match-stick aroma in their youth, but imparting a kaleidoscope of complexity as they age.

Prum also has excellent holdings in the nearby vineyard Graacher Himmelreich, which translates as “Kingdom of Heaven”. Yes, the wines are that good. Similar Devonican gray slate but there is a bit more sun exposure here leading to a richer, spicier take on Riesling. Rounding out the holdings is Bernkasteler Badstube, which borders Himmelreich to the south. Here the slope is a bit gentler and the western exposure gives it more late day sun, which leads to wines that are a bit more delicate and racy.
