Joseph Drouhin Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses 2018 [NET]

$57999

Drouhin, for years, was considered one of Burgundy's top negociants. Now they prefer to think of themselves as one of Burgundy's top domaines, and given they've been farming organic since 1990 and biodynamic shortly thereafter, the argument writes itself. The house style is restrained and perfumed, Beaune-elegant by inclination. Amoureuses sits right beside Le Musigny and routinely fetches grand cru prices. The 2018 is the warm, ripe, generous reading of the vintage: aromatically expressive, structured, with that telltale balance between alcohol and acidity that signals a serious year. More flesh than the 2017, more openness than the 2019.

"This is perhaps the most floral-infused wine in the range with terrific layering that includes perfumed notes of exotic tea, clove, red and dark fruit and a whiff of sandalwood. The refined, markedly stony and wonderfully delineated flavors possess a beguiling underlying tension before culminating in a palate coating, balanced and firm finale. This is exceptionally classy and I very much like the Zen-like sense of harmony. In short, this is a knockout." —Allen Meadows

"The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru, matured with 40% whole bunch, has an intense, feisty bouquet with hints of fresh prune permeating the red and blue fruit; precocious floral scents emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and very refined (more so than the aromatics at the moment). The multifaceted, satin-like finish lingers long in the mouth. Not the very best Les Amoureuses that I have encountered from Drouhin at this stage, but it delivers exactly what this wine should offer." —Neal Martin

"In the right hands, Les Amoureuses can produce one of Burgundy's most hauntingly graceful wines. Véronique Drouhin and her team have excelled in 2018, producing a Premier Cru with some clove and pepper spice notes from 40% whole bunches, 30% new wood and fine, fluid red berry flavours that glide across the tongue like a figure skater on ice. A Pinot lover's Pinot Noir." —Tim Atkin MW

More about Joseph Drouhin

Founded in 1880, Drouhin is generally considered to be the top tier of the larger Maisons in Burgundy. But today it has more land ownership than purchase agreements and acts as a large domaine that occasionally purchases fruit and leases land.

Maurice Drouhin began reducing chemical treatments in the vineyards way back in 1957, and for the past 3 decades now the Drouhins have been converting all their vineyards and fruit sources to biodynamic farming. They are considered leaders in biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy and throughout France.
