Julien Prelat Champagne Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut Chantemerle NV

Julien Prelat's rule is simple to the point of stubborn: one grape, one vineyard, one vintage, nothing blended away. He and his wife Karine were the first in the Prelat family to bottle their own Champagne, starting in 2010, working from Pinot Noir country in the Cote des Bar where the chalk gives way to Kimmeridgian marl. Chantemerle is Pinot Noir alone, vinified as a white and finished extra brut, so there's barely any dosage hiding the seams. It's a Blanc de Noirs with real red-fruit weight and a citrus lift on top, and it drinks like Champagne made by someone who'd rather be transparent than smooth. Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

More about Julien Prelat

We’ve gotten to the point in the Grower Champagne movement where the its core ideas are no longer revolutionary, but accepted practice. Names like Cedric Bouchard, Ulysse Collin and Jérôme Prévost are now firmly etched in super-stardom, and a whole second generation is starting out with those idols as mentors.

Enter Julien and Karine Prélat, from the small village of Celles-Sur-Ource in the Côte des Bar. If that village sounds familiar to you, it's because it is the home of their neighbor, friend, and mentor, Cedric Bouchard, of Roses de Jeanne fame. At the far southern end of Champagne, they live closer to Burgundy’s Chablis than to the vineyards of the Côte de Blancs, Montagne de Reims or Vallée de la Marne.

Like Cedric, Julien's primary goal is to make Champagne that clearly displays the place where it is grown. This means all wines are from a single vintage, single varietal, and single parcel, farmed with organic principles and extremely low yields, and picked very ripe for more phenolic flavor development, and to avoid dosage before bottling.

Julien took over his grandfather’s vines back in 2000 (the same year Cedric took some of his father's parcels over). He slowly applied more holistic approaches, but sold off his grapes all the while. Only recently did he apply lessons learned from Cedric, and began to vinify and bottle his own wines.
