La Loba Ribera del Duero 2019

$4699

This stunning modern expression of Tempranillo captures the cool climate energy of Matanza de Soria. It leads with a vivid, high toned aromatic profile of bright bing cherry and wild strawberry, layered over delicate notes of violet and a wisp of subtle earth and spice.. On the palate, the fruit turns deeper and more succulent with crushed red plums and a hint of forest floor, held together by an energized structure and moderately plush tannins. Broad and flavorful, it maintains a remarkable freshness and a savory, mineral etched finish. 2019 was an exceptional vintage and this wine is at the beginning of its peak drinkability. The bright fruit layers are beautifully expressive now, but La Loba’s balance and firm backbone will allow it to develop even more sophisticated, earthy, and savory nuances over the next 20 plus years in the cellar. Drink now, but with today's deep discount, make sure you do yourself a solid and stash a few away for a truly exemplary experience.

"A vaguely toasty nose is comprised by notes of plum, violet and plenty of earth and sauvage characters. The exceptionally rich, indeed suave and opulent, broad-shouldered flavors possess a natural sweetness that also suffuses the powerful and impressively long finish. This is compact and notably more structured so at least some patience is strongly advised. With that said, this beauty should be at least approachable after only 6 to 8 years of keeping." —Allen Meadows

"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux 1er Cru has a striking bouquet, very estuarine - a nose that evokes memories of frolicking on the mudflats in the Thames when I was a kid. Very fine delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins at the moment. Plenty of black fruit, very sapid, gets the saliva flowing on the finish. I'd still give this five years in bottle before considering opening one." —Neal Martin

"Bachelet has long striven to tame the structure of this site, but the 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux remains the most overtly tannic wine in the range this year. Offering up aromas of smoky berries, cherries and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, with a firm chassis of powdery tannin and a long, youthfully chewy finish." —William Kelley

More about La Loba

Ribera del Duero is known for big names and big wines — plush, oak-driven Tempranillos built for cellars and collectors. La Loba is something entirely different.

This is the personal project of Isabel Palomar, who farms a handful of ancient Tempranillo vines in the remote Soria subzone. It’s a rugged corner of Ribera, high in altitude and far to the east, where sandy soils and cooler nights produce wines with finer tannins and lifted aromatics. These vines are over a hundred years old, their roots deep in untouched soils that have never known chemicals.

Palomar’s approach is as singular as her vineyards. She works alone, harvesting by hand, fermenting with native yeasts, and aging the wine in neutral barrels so the terroir speaks clearly. The result is an expression of Ribera that’s almost shocking in its elegance: powerful, yes — but perfumed, mineral, and full of detail.

La Loba is becoming a cult favorite in Spain, snapped up by the country’s sommeliers on every release. It’s proof that even in a region as famous as Ribera del Duero, there are still new stories to tell.
