Las Pedreras La Coronela 2022

$5099

Perched high in the eastern Ribera, La Coronela is a single parcel of Tinto Fino that defies the usual assumptions—no heavy oak, no oversized fruit, no blockbuster ambition. Las Pedreras is part of a new generation pushing the region’s boundaries inward rather than outward, toward freshness, clarity, and detail.

The 2022 vintage is grown at elevation on limestone-rich soils, and you feel it—not through tasting notes, but through structure, movement, and light. It’s a wine that holds its power in reserve. The fruit is there, but dialed back. The tannins are fine but firm. It reads more Burgundian in frame than traditionally Ribera in scale.

La Coronela doesn’t chase the old Ribera playbook. It rewrites it—quietly, precisely, and with confidence in its own voice.

"The red 2022 La Coronela is completely different from the others—darker and with a different aromatic palette—as it was produced with Tempranillo or Tinto Fino grapes from a 60-year-old vineyard with a field blend of other varieties (Albillo Mayor, Moscatel, Bobal, Garnacha…) in Roa de Duero, a village in Ribera del Duero, but vinified and matured in Gredos and therefore without appellation of origin. It mixes floral notes with ripe berry fruit, integrated oak and a medium to full-bodied palate with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. This feels young and undeveloped and ripe without excess. It has 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.8 and 4.5 grams of acidity." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about Las Pedreras

Wine cognoscenti have been excited about Spain’s Sierra de Gredos region for a while now. There, you'll find old, old vines, distinctive granite soils, and steep slopes. Pruning, treating, plowing and harvesting all entail backbreaking work; as more and more young people move to the cities, and away from agriculture, the Gredos is almost lost to time.

Of course, not entirely. Some of Spain’s most important winemakers have projects here, from the legendary-in-their-own time Comando G to roving enologist Raúl Perez. In the Gredos, Garnacha becomes something ethereal, almost otherworldly. The poor soils, the high elevation, the ancient vines — these all work together to impart real finesse and elegance to a grape that many have written off as boozy, brash and basic.

One of the most exciting Gredos projects we’ve tasted recently comes from Las Pedreras, a new protect from wunderkind winemaker Bárbara Requejo Frutos and Guzmán Sánchez de la Parra, a Gredos native and restauranteur. Bárbara, a Ribera del Duero native, is young (we’re not sure she’s 30 yet), but her resumé is impressive, with stints at Haut-Brion, Pierre Péters, and Peay under her belt. Here are glowy examples of the many faces Garnacha can show, from pale pink rosé (with or without bubbles) to garnet-red, crisp and aromatic to bold and textured.
