Lignier-Michelot Morey Saint Denis En La Rue de Vergy 2022

$9899

Planted directly above Clos de Tart on terraced limestone with shallow marl topsoil, this Morey-Saint-Denis village wine carries the character of a superior lieu-dit. The 2022 includes 50% whole bunches and rests 12 months in 20-30% new oak, emerging with cherry, red berries, licorice, and rose petal aromatics. Medium-bodied and fine-structured, it shows why Virgile Lignier's wines punch above their classification.

"This is at once ripe yet cool and airy with its aromas of poached plum, black raspberry and violet hints. The supple, delicious and vibrant middleweight flavors possess both good detail and a prominent bead of minerality that adds a sense of lift to the lingering finale. This too could use better depth so a few years of cellaring should prove beneficial."

"The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis En la Rue de Vergy includes 50% whole bunches this year. This cuvée lacked the precision I found in Lignier-Michelot's other wines, a bit of warmth detracting from its clarity. The palate is medium-bodied with black cherry and blueberry fruit. There’s fine structure, though I seek a little more roundness and fluidity on the finish. It’s just a tad abrupt." —Neal Martin

"From vines planted in the 1970s at the top of the slope above the Clos des Lambrays, Lignier's 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis En La Rue de Vergy offers up notes of cherries, red berries, licorice and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, bright and mineral, it's a pure, refined wine whose ethereal style reflects its origins." —William Kelley

More about Lignier-Michelot

Virgile Lignier is one of those rare Burgundy vignerons whose wines somehow miraculously get better with each successive vintage. We have been tasting his wines critically since 1999 -- they were great then and they are even better now.

How does he it? Through constant improvement in the vineyards and at the winery, year after year. By growing better grapes, by selecting only the best, by staying out of the way in the cellar, by becoming better at everything he does. The wines have a remarkable purity and depth of flavor yet are delicate and light on their feet - "airien" is a good word.
