Lisini Brunello di Montalcino 2020

$7599

Lisini’s 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is crafted from estate-grown Sangiovese vines planted on clay-limestone soils at 300–400 meters elevation. The wine is traditionally fermented and aged 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks.

It shows concentrated red cherry, plum, and spice with balanced acidity and firm tannins. A classic Brunello combining power and elegance with excellent aging potential.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a total pleasure to take in, with its florist shop bouquet of perfumed violet, lavender and wet stone complementing dusty dried strawberries and hints of rhubarb. Zesty and fresh, sporting medium-bodied weight, it sweeps across the palate with tart wild berry fruit and lavender tones, propelled by zesty acidity. The 2020 doesn't skip a beat, finishing with silty tannins, tinges of licorice and sour citrus and fantastic length." —Eric Guido

"Impenetrable dark crimson and enormous colour both for the vintage and the grape variety. Firm, concentrated dark cherry and blueberry peppered with spice and notes of oak – super-skilfully done. Suave and lots of concentration, perfectly balanced and layered with fine tannins. Definitely needs another year in bottle." —Walter Speller

"Here is the epitome of 2020’s seductiveness: dark exotic berries are tinged with a scent of juniper, while the palate strikes an arresting fusion of black cherry and lush apricot, with a ferruginous facet. Fulsome without being weighty, it deftly balances sumptuousness with rigour as firm tannins mark their territory. With this vintage, Lisini finally returns to its full lineup of Brunello. It is difficult to imagine the Ugolaia or Riserva bottlings topping this, however we will have to wait until next year see how those wines fare." —Michaela Morris

Wine Spectator

"A mix of graphite, cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors marks this expressive red. Earth, leather and wild herb accents add depth, and this shows the structure to develop for at least a decade or more. Its firm, dusty tannins will require time to integrate. Best from 2027 through 2045."

Kerin O'Keefe

"The full-bodied 2020 Lisini Brunello has intense balsamic aromas of camphor and eucalyptus that mingle with violet, dark-skinned berry and dark spice. Bold, high-toned and already delicious even at this primary stage, the firm, enveloping palate delivers crushed raspberry, fleshy Morello cherry, star anise and white pepper before a black tea finish. Tightly woven, close-grained tannins provide the backbone while fresh acidity keeps it lifted. Drink 2029–2035." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Lisini

This old-school property sits at the southwest corner of the Montalcino zone, at about 350 meters above sea, and the vineyards face south towards Maremma and the coast. This situation provides warm, dry breezes that allow them to farm their vines and olive trees with both organic and sustainable practices. The 20 hectares of vines are entirely Sangiovese and made up of massale selections of the original plantings from 1930.

All fermentations are done in glass-lined cement tanks and aging is exclusively in large, Slavonian oak casks. Current winemaker Filippo Paoletti learned his craft from the former winemaker Franco Bernabei (of Fontodi and Felsina) as well as the Sangiovese master Giulio Gambelli (Soldera, Biondi Santi and of course Montevertine) and his style reflects their influence. The focus is on the elegance and transparency of Tuscany’s native variety; silky red fruits, earth and minerals always shine through.
