Lucian Aviet (Caveau de Bacchus) Melon A Queue Rouge Blanc 2022

$6199

Don't let the name trip you up: Melon a Queue Rouge is a Jura cousin of Chardonnay whose stems turn red at harvest, but the wine in the glass is a white. This is the work of Caveau de Bacchus, the Aviet family's traditional estate in Montigny-les-Arsures, and it's a rare grape grown by only a handful of producers around Arbois. Aged in old oak foudres, it shows off Alpine freshness and a savory edge. Expect white flowers, yellow orchard fruit, a hint of toasted hazelnut and a notably saline finish. A delicious oddity for the curious.

"The 2022 Cuvée des Docteurs Melon à Queue Rouge Ouillé shows the warmer and riper character of the vintage when tasted next to the 2023. It's more structured and richer (within the light and elegant style of the wine), rounder and with a tender palate, moderate alcohol and integrated acidity. 3,100 bottles were produced. They normally do two bottlings of this wine, and I tasted the second bottling of the 2022." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about Lucian Aviet (Caveau de Bacchus)

Lucien Aviet began making wine in the Jura in 1971, establishing himself as a master of the indigenous Trousseau grape. While his son, Vincent, has taken over the day-to-day in recent years, the library releases reveal perfect consistency of quality and style. But it's not just the Trousseau that excites here; everything done at chez Aviet confirms their place as one of the Jura's benchmark producers.
