Luis Pato Bairrada Vinho Tinto 2024

$1999

A roughly 50/50 blend of Baga and Touriga Nacional, fermented and aged in stainless steel with a delicate extraction. Bright, juicy, but with a hint of dry tannin and a long salty finish. Somewhere between a Beaujolais Village and Lange Rosso in style.

More about Luis Pato

Luis Pato is one of Portugal’s greats, and his wines number among not just Portugal’s best, but the wine world in general. They’ve been under-appreciated in the States for some time, but a new, New York-based importer has revived interest in these long-lived wines that are simultaneously wild and refined. We’ve fallen head over heels, and we are so impressed with both the fresh releases and the pre-cellared options (that come in at astoundingly fair prices).

Luis’ signature grape is Baga — a versatile grape, difficult to grow (like Pinot Noir), with thin skins, high acid and the potential for intense tannin structure. In Bairrada, the chalky, clayey soils and maritime influence lend great minerality and a wonderful savory quality. Luis de-stems his fruit, preferring fruit purity over woody, green or herbal flavors, and he opts for long aging in French oak, mostly old. Wines are then aged in Bairrada until they’re deemed ready for release.

And though Baga is his signature, his white wines are not to be missed — they are crisp, delicately aromatic, refreshing and similarly affected by the sea breezes; they are delightfully saline and mineral-driven. They are of course also made from indigenous Portuguese varieties, like Bical and Cerceal.
