Magoutes Rose 2025

A rosé from a grape that almost ceased to exist. Moschomavro is indigenous to Siatista, in the Askio mountains of Greek Macedonia, and was down to a handful of old plots by the 1970s; nearly everything planted today traces back to cuttings Dimitris Diamantis took from his grandfather's hand-grafted, century-old vines, the same material he used to replant 18 hectares in the 1990s. The grape is naturally pale and light in tannin — a red variety that practically asks to be made as a rosé — and Diamantis's vineyards, on rocky limestone at 800 to 900 meters in a cool, almost Alpine climate, keep the acidity taut. He works with minimal intervention in vineyard and cellar. This is a dry, savory, mineral rosé rather than a fruity one, and considerably more interesting than most bottles that share its color. Drink it young and cold.

More about Magoutes

Dimitrios Diamintis is nearly single-handedly bringing a lost appellation back to life. Siatista is a small town in Macedonia with a long winemaking history but not much of a present. Dimitrios is working to change that — he’s seeking PDO status that would make Siatista Greece’s 5th Xinomavro-based appellation. He’s the proud owner of a vineyard of 100+ year old vines that were hand grafted by his grandfather; in the ‘90s, Dimitrios was able to use this genetic material to replant 18 hectares.

The vines are planted on clay and limestone soils in the foothills of the Askio mountain range. High elevation, mineral-rich soils and distinctive massale selections, combined with talented hands in the cellar, make for supremely elegant and mineral-driven wines. I

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled sardines or octopus, taramasalata and other mezze, shrimp saganaki, or a tomato and feta salad. Just as happy with charcuterie and picnic food.

Tasting Profile

Wild strawberry and pink grapefruit with a floral, herbal edge. Light-bodied and bone dry, with brisk acidity and a stony, faintly saline finish.
