A white wine made from a red grape: Xinomavro pressed off its skins fast enough that the juice never picks up color or tannin — a blanc de noirs, off old field-blended plots. It comes from Dimitris Diamantis in Siatista, in the Askio mountains of Greek Macedonia, off hundred-plus-year-old vines his grandfather hand-grafted — the genetic material Diamantis used to replant 18 hectares in the 1990s. Rocky limestone at 750 to 890 meters, a cool near-Alpine climate and a deliberately hands-off cellar give a wine whose minerality, as we said the first time we tasted it, is off the charts. Xinomavro is usually discussed as Greece's answer to Nebbiolo and almost never thought of as a white grape at all, which is precisely why this is one of the most distinctive Greek whites on our shelves. Serve it cold but not ice-cold, in a big glass.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Dimitrios Diamintis is nearly single-handedly bringing a lost appellation back to life. Siatista is a small town in Macedonia with a long winemaking history but not much of a present. Dimitrios is working to change that — he’s seeking PDO status that would make Siatista Greece’s 5th Xinomavro-based appellation. He’s the proud owner of a vineyard of 100+ year old vines that were hand grafted by his grandfather; in the ‘90s, Dimitrios was able to use this genetic material to replant 18 hectares.

The vines are planted on clay and limestone soils in the foothills of the Askio mountain range. High elevation, mineral-rich soils and distinctive massale selections, combined with talented hands in the cellar, make for supremely elegant and mineral-driven wines. I

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled whole fish with lemon, shrimp saganaki, roasted vegetables in good olive oil, or a wedge of aged goat cheese. Excellent with fried chicken, too.

Tasting Profile

White peach, pear skin and citrus over a stony, alpine core. Medium-bodied and dry, with firm acidity and real texture from the old vines. Long, saline, mineral finish.
