Malartic Lagraviere Pessac-Leognan Le Comte de Malartic 2019

$3899

This is the second wine of Château Malartic-Lagravière, one of the few Pessac-Léognan estates classified as a Graves Cru Classé for both its reds and whites. Le Comte de Malartic (formerly La Réserve de Malartic) is drawn from the same 73-hectare estate in Léognan and made with the same care as the grand vin. The 2019 is Merlot-led, rounded out with Cabernet Sauvignon and a splash of Petit Verdot, giving an aromatic, supple style with the gravelly Graves signature. Approachable now but with the structure to hold, it's a smart way into the address without the grand vin price.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2019 Le Comte de Malartic (hitherto La Réserve de Malartic Blanc) offers Granny Smith apples, lime and petrichor scents on the nose, neutral at first but gaining more personality with aeration. The palate is well balanced and fresh, with a fine bead of acidity and a touch of pineapple toward the finish. Taut and linear, this will drink well for the next decade." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

90 points

"The 2019 La Réserve de Malartic is a blend of 82.6% Merlot, 12.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5.1% Petit Verdot, harvested from the 17th of September to the 11th of October. The wine is aging in French oak barrels, 25% new, for approximately 15 months. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with invigorating notes of black raspberries, kirsch and wild blueberries with hints of hoisin sauce, potpourri and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating juicy black and blue fruits with a pleasant chewiness to the texture and just enough freshness, finishing savory." —Robert Parker

"A lovely 2nd wine, soft grilled caramel around the edges of plump black fruits, well judged extraction and great freshness through the palate. No need to wait to enjoy this as the tannins are so carefully integrated, but it still has impact and elegance, and a real reminder of the first wine."
