Two oranges, not one: bitter orange skin from Haiti and sweet orange zest from the south of Spain, distilled together with aromatic plants into a triple sec with a real edge to it. That bitterness is the whole point — it's what keeps a Margarita or a Sidecar from sliding into candy, and it's why bartenders reach for a proper French liqueur instead of whatever's cheapest on the back bar. The house dates from 1755, when Marie Brizard — born in Bordeaux in 1714 — went into business with her partner Jean-Baptiste Roger. Long experience with botanicals shows: this is built as a cocktail component first, and it does that job without shouting. The litre bottle is the sensible buy if you make drinks with any regularity.
