Marine Layer Sonoma Coast Chardonnay Aries 2024

$4499

Cool-climate California Chardonnay with real tension, assembled from lots across the Sonoma Coast's coldest addresses: Green Valley, the Petaluma Gap, and Marine Layer's own vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills. Baron Ziegler and Rob Fischer built Banshee, sold it, and started over with a single obsession, the Pacific fog that rolls in and keeps this stretch of coast cold enough to make wines that stay bright. That fog is the marine layer, hence the name; Aries is the constellation that appears as the Chardonnay vines wake from dormancy in spring. Hand-picked at night and pressed whole-cluster, the wine fermented on native yeasts at 58 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit in concrete egg and oak puncheon, 20% new, went fully through malolactic, and spent eleven months on the lees with gentle monthly stirring before being bottled unfined and lightly filtered.

"The 2024 Chardonnay Aries is a gorgeous, precise wine. Lemon peel, chalk, mint, white flowers and dried herbs soar out of the glass. Bright and chiseled to the core, the Aries Chardonnay is a fabulous entry-level bottling in this range from Marine Layer, if that term can even be used. This is such a classy wine." —Antonio Galloni

More about Marine Layer

As the wine world veered away from power and ripeness and towards freshness in elegance in the last 15 years or so, it was inevitable that cooler climates would become more and more desirable – especially as global warming is driving traditional vineyard temperatures in the opposite direction.

This is especially true in the New World. Outside of Europe, our vineyards have the reputation of being located in warm sites that easily produce ripe fruit. Think of California’s hot Central Valley, where most of the state’s wines are produced. But California – like Argentina or Australia for that matter – also has cooler climates. And it is these cooler sites that are now playing the starring role in our wines.

So it is that Baron Ziegler and Rob Fischer became obsessed with the idea of producing wine from top sites along the Sonoma Coast. These are very cool, thanks to fogs that roll in off the ocean and keep the sunlight out. That fog is called the “marine layer”. So they named their winery Marine Layer.
