Marine Layer Sonoma Coast Chardonnay Marine Layer Vineyard 2023

$5699

One acre of Wente-clone Chardonnay in the northeast corner of Marine Layer's own six-acre vineyard, planted in 2016 on a southwest-facing slope of sandy Goldridge soil in the Sebastopol Hills. Baron Ziegler and Rob Fischer sold Banshee and started Marine Layer to chase one thing, the Pacific fog that keeps this part of the Sonoma Coast cold, and this is the wine made closest to home. Tiny, concentrated clusters were hand-picked at night on September 20th and sent whole-cluster to press; the free run settled 24 hours and went into French and Austrian oak puncheons, 30% new, for a cool native ferment and spontaneous malolactic. Eleven months on the lees with monthly stirring, then bottled unfined and lightly filtered. Only 200 cases were made.

"The 2023 Chardonnay Marine Layer Vineyard emerges from a one-acre parcel planted with Wente clone. Dynamic and layered, the 2023 is seriously impressive from start to finish. Orchard fruit, mint, tangerine oil, spice and a discreet touch of oak all grace this striking, beautifully tense Chardonnay from Marine Layer." —Antonio Galloni

More about Marine Layer

As the wine world veered away from power and ripeness and towards freshness in elegance in the last 15 years or so, it was inevitable that cooler climates would become more and more desirable – especially as global warming is driving traditional vineyard temperatures in the opposite direction.

This is especially true in the New World. Outside of Europe, our vineyards have the reputation of being located in warm sites that easily produce ripe fruit. Think of California’s hot Central Valley, where most of the state’s wines are produced. But California – like Argentina or Australia for that matter – also has cooler climates. And it is these cooler sites that are now playing the starring role in our wines.

So it is that Baron Ziegler and Rob Fischer became obsessed with the idea of producing wine from top sites along the Sonoma Coast. These are very cool, thanks to fogs that roll in off the ocean and keep the sunlight out. That fog is called the “marine layer”. So they named their winery Marine Layer.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Seared scallops, lobster with drawn butter, roast chicken, crab risotto, or a wedge of Comté.

Tasting Profile

Tangerine, marmalade and Meyer lemon with marzipan and a hint of brioche. Medium-bodied with genuine mid-palate weight and a textural, slightly oily feel, cut by sea-salt minerality and bright acid. Long, citrus-fresh finish with a touch of hazelnut.
