Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 2002

$6499

We don't drink enough sweet wines. They offer pleasures like no other wines — and Moulin Touchais is one of the world's great cases for the category. Sweet Chenin Blanc from the hills along the Layon river in the Loire, made by a family that's been at it since 1787 using a unique two-pass harvest method: a first pick of grapes still bursting with acid (for the wine's backbone and 50-100-year aging potential), then a later pick of fully ripe fruit (for the honey and apricot we crave in dessert wines). The family holds wines back for decades before release. This 2002 has crossed into its prime drinking window with many years still ahead — the kind of bottle that ends a long dinner the right way.

"Hailing from a cooler vintage, the 2002 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon offers great balance and vivacity. Pale golden and shining bright in the glass, this is sweet yet elegant with a touch of that medicinal character you get from botrytis (c.30%) alongside apricots, orange segments and the merest hint of ground almonds. It's very charming with its residual sugar (close to the 100g/L mark) providing a plump and runny honey-like generosity. Remains youthful, lively and tangy with an almost salty freshness." —Rebecca Gibb, MW

"This is hitting its stride now, with bright chamomile and quinine notes leading to a ripe, creamy core of peach, papaya and melon flavors. The long finish leans toward the racier side of the spectrum, with citronella and honeysuckle details echoing."

More about Moulin Touchais

Moulin Touchais is a historic winery dating, like our Constitution, back to 1787. But unlike the Constitution, these guys don't really fit the mold for 21st century (wine) darlings: they're a really big property, they make only one wine, and it's sweet. Which is all the more reason to love them!

Nearly all of the juice from those 145ha is sold locally as a cheap second label, and only the best of the fruit from the best parcels, the Coteaux du Layon holdings, is used for the estate's single wine. That single wine, which never sees oak, is a tremendous snapshot of vintage character.
