This is Pahlmeyer from the beginning: Randy Dunn made it, and the fruit came from Caldwell Vineyard, where the whole Pahlmeyer story started with a suitcase. Jayson Pahlmeyer was a trial lawyer who arrived in Napa with Bordeaux vine cuttings he'd smuggled in. In 1981 he and his friend John Caldwell quietly planted them on Caldwell's property in Coombsville. The fruit got noticed, and Dunn agreed to make Pahlmeyer's first Proprietary Red, the 1986, in exchange for access to it. The 1991 comes from that same early partnership. It was made years before Pahlmeyer planted its own mountain vineyard in the late 1990s. It's a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend (85%) that uses all five classic Bordeaux grapes, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and a splash of Malbec. If you want to know how one of Napa's most talked-about names got started, this mature bottle is a great place to begin. Stand it upright for a day and decant it gently.

Tasting Profile

Expect a classic Napa take on a Cabernet-led Bordeaux blend: blackcurrant and black cherry, with Merlot adding plummy softness and Cabernet Franc a herbal lift. Typically full-bodied and firmly built, with fine tannins and fresh acidity. With long bottle age, wines in this style usually turn more savoury, picking up cedar, tobacco and earth, and finish long and dry.
