Rajat Parr has leased the whole of Phelan Farm since 2019, and Cuvée B is a second Pinot Noir from the farm's San Luis Obispo lineup, bottled separately from the regular one. The farm sits in Cambria, on the cool, maritime stretch of the San Luis Obispo coast, with soils of felsite and pink quartz. Parr names Thierry Allemand, Jean-Louis Chave and Stéphane Tissot as his main inspirations, all farmers first and winemakers second, and that shows in how the place is run. The farming mixes permaculture and biodynamic principles with regenerative agriculture. In the cellar the house sticks to natural-yeast ferments and moves the wine by gravity into older barrels of various sizes, with nothing added. Every bottle is then filled, corked and labeled by hand. The coastal climate keeps alcohol low across the range. The whole estate makes a little under 1,000 cases, so this is California Pinot for anyone who wants the farm to have the final say, and it's worth grabbing when you see it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Seared salmon with sautéed chanterelles; roast duck breast with cherries; mushroom risotto; herb-roasted chicken thighs; a plate of Comté and saucisson.

Tasting Profile

Expect a light, low-alcohol coastal Pinot Noir: red cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry with savoury, herbal and earthy notes, the older barrels adding texture rather than oaky flavour. Typically there's bright, mouthwatering acidity and fine, gentle tannins leading to a dry, fresh finish. Think red Burgundy more than ripe, plush California Pinot.
