"Pungent aromas of firm reduction and wood overshadow the fruit at present. More interesting are the lush and plush middle weight flavors that possess a caressing and highly seductive mouthfeel before culminating a sappy, clean and dry finish that is supported by ever-so-mildly tangy acidity. I suspect that once this is prepared for the bottling it will have less CO2 and thus the tanginess will naturally diminish, or so my range assumes."

"The 2023 Saint-Aubin La Chatenière 1er Cru has more reduction on the nose compared to Colin's other Premier Crus. The palate is fresh on the entry, quite intense with a little flintiness in the background. Once the 2023 is in bottle, its razor-sharp finish is going to be a killer." —Neal Martin

"Aromas of pear, white flowers, nutmeg, toasted hazelnuts and clear honey introduce the 2023 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru La Chatenière, a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny wine that's seamless and saline. Precise but open, this will offer a broad drinking window." —William Kelley

"Although near Champelots, La Chatenière is more a continuation of En Remilly, delivering wines with lemony fruit and crisp acidity. The family farms three parcels here; the one with younger vines brings acidity, the other two are 50–60 years of age and deliver ripeness and volume. The blend of all three produces a marvellous result. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters and fermented in cask, one-third new."

More about Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey became a star for all kinds of reasons.

Partly, it was because he was an early master of a style of white Burgundy that has now become very popular: less oaky (thanks in part to larger barrels), no lees-stirring, earlier picked, a bit more reductive. The aim is not to make the fat wines that were still popular when he was starting out, but rather expressive wines that were chiseled and precise. His wines do all of this so well that he persuaded the rest of us to go along for the ride.

He also became a star because of critical acclaim, and it was the right kind of critical acclaim for the moment. Way back in 2008 Jancis Robinson wrote up PYCM and headlined it: “Making Chassagne more like Riesling”, capturing the style of these wines perfectly. Only Jancis could make a star of Klaus-Peter Keller by comparing his Rieslings to white Burgundy and a star of PYCM by comparing his white Burgundies to Riesling!

But we think he also became a star for a reason that some may overlook: he has long been a champion of Burgundy’s so-called lesser terroirs, and he has been able to make from them incredible wines that can reach a larger audience.
