Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Grandes Ruchottes 2023 [NET]

$41499

Les Grandes Ruchottes is a tiny Chassagne 1er Cru perched high on the slope - one of the smallest 1er Crus in the village, stony and intense by reputation, with very little wine made anywhere by anyone. In Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey's hands, the site finds its ideal interpreter: PYCM (a champion of Burgundy's lesser-sung terroirs and the architect of a less-oaky, no-stirring, early-picked, reductive white Burgundy style that Jancis once called 'making Chassagne more like Riesling') pulls every ounce of mineral intensity out of the parcel. The result is one of the most razor-cut, age-worthy whites in his lineup. A unicorn site, a generational stylist.

"From a purchase of fruit. This is at once aromatically cool and airy yet definitely ripe with its combination of various white orchard fruit scents laced with hints of zest, anise and acacia blossom. The rich and gorgeously textured medium-bodied flavors possess both focused power and a prominent bead of minerality that adds a sense of lift to the balanced, sappy and citrus-tinged finale. Excellent and clearly built-to-age." —Allen Meadows

"The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Grandes Ruchottes 1er Cru has quite a bit of reduction on the nose, but there is real power in situ. The palate is well balanced with impressive depth, leaning more toward Puligny in style thanks to its more malic finish. This has fine tension but is a bit "aloof" at the moment. Give it time." —Neal Martin

"The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes is from sourced grapes and offers up aromas of pear and orange oil mingled with notes of hazelnuts, white flowers and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's charming and layered, with succulent acids and a saline finish." —William Kelley

"A marvellous wine with a thrilling, lemony tension on the initial attack, but a bit more breadth and depth in time as it opens up. The grapes are purchased from a 0.3ha parcel, but the PYCM team has full control over the grape-growing and picking, so this is crafted in the domaine's racy and elegant style. Cellar this for three to five years at least before opening, and then enjoy over the next 20."

More about Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey became a star for all kinds of reasons.

Partly, it was because he was an early master of a style of white Burgundy that has now become very popular: less oaky (thanks in part to larger barrels), no lees-stirring, earlier picked, a bit more reductive. The aim is not to make the fat wines that were still popular when he was starting out, but rather expressive wines that were chiseled and precise. His wines do all of this so well that he persuaded the rest of us to go along for the ride.

He also became a star because of critical acclaim, and it was the right kind of critical acclaim for the moment. Way back in 2008 Jancis Robinson wrote up PYCM and headlined it: “Making Chassagne more like Riesling”, capturing the style of these wines perfectly. Only Jancis could make a star of Klaus-Peter Keller by comparing his Rieslings to white Burgundy and a star of PYCM by comparing his white Burgundies to Riesling!

But we think he also became a star for a reason that some may overlook: he has long been a champion of Burgundy’s so-called lesser terroirs, and he has been able to make from them incredible wines that can reach a larger audience.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied yet bone-dry and tense: crushed stone, lemon oil, white flowers, smoky reduction, sea salt. Tightly wound now; built for a decade or more of slow evolution.
