Produttori del Barbaresco 2022

$5199

If you want to understand what Barbaresco actually tastes like, start here. This is the classic Barbaresco from Produttori del Barbaresco, the grower cooperative that has been the appellation's conscience since 1958. Roughly fifty member families farm Nebbiolo across the Barbaresco zone, and their fruit goes into this bottling — in years when the single-vineyard Riservas aren't declared, all of it does. Nothing is dressed up: fermentation in stainless, aging in large Slavonian oak casks, no makeup. What comes out is Nebbiolo in full uniform — rose petal, tar, sour cherry, and dried herbs, riding on the fine, gripping tannins that let these wines run for decades. 2022 was a warm, dry year in Piedmont, and the fruit here is generous, but the structure is very much intact. Give it an hour in a decanter tonight, or lose it in the cellar for five to ten years. Few wines this serious ask so little of the drinker.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Barbaresco is a pretty rich, heady wine. Dark cherry/plum fruit, cloves, licorice and mocha build as the 2022 shows off its considerable depth. This is one of the few 2022s that is quite resonant texturally. The aromatics could be more lifted and the tannins could use a bit more polish, but those qualities were next to impossible to come by in 2022. The inclusion of some juice from Riserva lots is a great help. All things considered, this is a stellar showing." —Antonio Galloni

"A relatively early harvest saw Produttori del Barbaresco's grapes brought in between 22 September and 3 October. The cooperative decided to reduce the production of its Riserva crus, using approximately 25%-30% of those grapes to bring greater balance to this flagship wine. It is deep, vibrant ruby in hue and just as lively on the nose. Dark currants tangle with brushwood and liquorice root. The palate is rambunctious, full of vigour, racing acidity and earth-tinged wild berries. The alcohol packs a punch but is matched by the fruit concentration and confident structure. Crisp, dry tannins will keep this ticking along. Drink 2026-2038." —Michaela Morris

"Packed with cherry and raspberry flavours, this red wine is round and juicy, with a fleshy profile and a solid base of tannins. Mineral and menthol accents add depth, and the finish is fresh and long."

"The straight 2022 Barbaresco from Produttori del Barbaresco is fragrant and refined, with aromas of blue flower, red berry, citrus and a balsamic whiff of eucalyptus. Surprisingly fresh and juicy for the hot, extremely dry vintage, it boasts flavors of tart red cherry, orange zest and star anise alongside taut, refined tannins that leave some grip on the finish. Drink through 2030." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Produttori del Barbaresco

The Produttori is Barbaresco’s benchmark producer. A huge share of the village’s best farmers, representing virtually all of its best terroirs, bring their fruit to the co-op. It is hard to be admitted to the co-op. There is a waiting list; only a few make it.

Once you are in, the rules are strict. You don't get to hold back any wine for your own labels. This isn't a region where growers ship off their second best to the co-op and put their pride and joy in their own luxury bottles. You have to meet strict quality controls, of course. The Produttori is only devoted to quality-minded farmers with incredible terroir giving their all.

The winemaking is likewise next level. Aldo Vacca, the co-op’s general manager, is one of the wine world’s greatest artists. If you ever have the opportunity to meet and taste with him, take it; he is also one of the wine world’s great communicators.
