Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo 2021

$9999

Among the best values for cellar-worthy wine in the world: the Produttori del Barbaresco's single-vineyard Riservas, bottled only in top vintages from the appellation's finest crus. Rio Sordo sits in a cooler pocket on the Barbaresco side and gives a fresh, perfumed, finely balanced style, bright-fruited and aromatic, with elegant rather than muscular structure. It's a graceful, food-friendly expression of the zone. These Riservas drink beautifully at 5, 10, 20, even 30 years, and getting to know the adjacent crus, each a subtly different take shaped by soil and exposure, is one of wine's greatest experiences. The 2021 has the balance to age yet shows real charm.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo marries finesse and power. Open-knit aromatics make a strong first impression. Layered and resonant in the glass, with tons of supporting structure, the Rio Sordo is going to need a few years to come into its own. Crushed rose petal, cedar, spice and tobacco lend notable finesse. The 2021 needs time, but it's got the goods. The explosive, aromatic finish is sublime." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

"Dense and even square-shouldered, with a smoldering inner core of black cherry and blackberry fruit shaded by iron and underbrush flavors. Fresh and harmonious despite a swath of broad tannins on the finish, which goes on and on. Best from 2029 through 2047."

"Eucalyptus, dark spice, dark-skinned berry, iris, camphor and leather aromas come to the forefront on the vividly fragrant 2021 Rio Sordo Riserva from Produttori del Barbaresco. Showing the great intensity that’s a hallmark of the outstanding vintage, the structured palate offers ripe cherry, wild strawberry, orange zest, hazelnut and dark culinary spice alongside firm, well-integrated tannins while fresh acidity keeps it balanced." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Produttori del Barbaresco

The Produttori is Barbaresco’s benchmark producer. A huge share of the village’s best farmers, representing virtually all of its best terroirs, bring their fruit to the co-op. It is hard to be admitted to the co-op. There is a waiting list; only a few make it.

Once you are in, the rules are strict. You don't get to hold back any wine for your own labels. This isn't a region where growers ship off their second best to the co-op and put their pride and joy in their own luxury bottles. You have to meet strict quality controls, of course. The Produttori is only devoted to quality-minded farmers with incredible terroir giving their all.

The winemaking is likewise next level. Aldo Vacca, the co-op’s general manager, is one of the wine world’s greatest artists. If you ever have the opportunity to meet and taste with him, take it; he is also one of the wine world’s great communicators.
