Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota 2021

$9999

Among the best values for cellar-worthy wine in the world: the Produttori del Barbaresco's single-vineyard Riservas, made only in top vintages from the zone's greatest crus. Muncagota (long known as Moccagatta) sits on the Barbaresco side and offers a more open, fruit-forward and approachable style, generous and perfumed, with structure that's present but less austere than the sterner crus. It's a wonderful way into the Riserva range. These wines drink well at 5, 10, 20, even 30 years, and getting to know the adjacent crus, each a shifting take on the same grape and place, is one of wine's greatest experiences. The 2021 is built to age but charms relatively early.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is laced with strong floral and savory notes. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin give the 2021 its driving, tense personality. I expect those qualities will be positives for the future, but today the Muncagota is pretty forbidding. Give this time. This is one of the most tense editions of this wine I can remember tasting." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

95 points

"The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is a dense, hulking wine. Powerful and dense to the core, the Montestefano is a big, broad-shouldered wine that is going to need a few years to be at its most expressive. Dark-toned fruit, new leather, spice, menthol are all amplified in this potent Barbaresco." —Bruce Sanderson

Kerin O'Keefe

98 points

"You’ll find compelling aromas of rosemary, hay, camphor and crushed mint on the intensely fragrant and fabulous 2021 Muncagota. Full-bodied and loaded with energy, the savory palate features ripe red cherry, black raspberry, citrus and dark spice as well as the rosemary note from the nose. Firm, well-integrated tannins provide support and give the finish grip. Drink 2029–2036." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Produttori del Barbaresco

The Produttori is Barbaresco’s benchmark producer. A huge share of the village’s best farmers, representing virtually all of its best terroirs, bring their fruit to the co-op. It is hard to be admitted to the co-op. There is a waiting list; only a few make it.

Once you are in, the rules are strict. You don't get to hold back any wine for your own labels. This isn't a region where growers ship off their second best to the co-op and put their pride and joy in their own luxury bottles. You have to meet strict quality controls, of course. The Produttori is only devoted to quality-minded farmers with incredible terroir giving their all.

The winemaking is likewise next level. Aldo Vacca, the co-op’s general manager, is one of the wine world’s greatest artists. If you ever have the opportunity to meet and taste with him, take it; he is also one of the wine world’s great communicators.
