Among the best values for cellar-worthy wine in the world: the Produttori del Barbaresco's single-vineyard Riservas, made only in top vintages from the appellation's greatest crus. Asili, in the Barbaresco commune, is one of the most celebrated sites of all, prized for its elegance and perfume rather than sheer power. Expect a refined, floral, finely structured wine, the more graceful, lifted side of Barbaresco. These wines are famous for delivering consistently at 5, 10, 20, even 30 years; getting to know the adjacent crus, each a shifting take on the same grape and zone, is one of wine's greatest experiences. The 2021 has the stuffing for a long life; give it time.

"The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is an alluring beauty that melds together the signatures of this site with the structure of the year at this address. Floral, bright and bursting with energy, the Asili is a star. Blood orange, kirsch, red-toned fruit, cedar, mint and spice rush from the glass. Here, too, readers will have to be patient. This is pure and total sensuality." —Antonio Galloni

"From an excellent range of wines from the 2021 vintage, the Asili is characterised by its particular finesse and stately, effortless power. It combines cherry blossom with warm summer berries, freshly heaped earth and pine needles. But in reality, its expression is still brooding, simmering and waiting to explode. The tannins are dominant without being aggressive. Very crisp and precise."

"Bursting with raspberry, black cherry, violet and mineral aromas and flavors, this red is supple and juicy. Its refined tannins are offset by youthful flesh and provide plenty of support for future development. Balanced, with a long finish that picks up notes of wild herbs."

"Always the most perfumed and elegant of all the single vineyard bottlings from Produttori del Barbaresco, the 2021 Asili Riserva is stunningly gorgeous. A textbook expression of this celebrated site and of the outstanding vintage, it captivates with intense aromas of violet, wild rose, ripe berry and cake spice. Elegant but still youthfully nervous, the palate delivers layers of ripe Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, blood orange, star anise and nutmeg accompanied by coiled but refined tannins. It’s young but already wonderfully balanced, with bright acidity. Give this beauty time to fully develop. Drink 2029–2041." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Produttori del Barbaresco

The Produttori is Barbaresco’s benchmark producer. A huge share of the village’s best farmers, representing virtually all of its best terroirs, bring their fruit to the co-op. It is hard to be admitted to the co-op. There is a waiting list; only a few make it.

Once you are in, the rules are strict. You don't get to hold back any wine for your own labels. This isn't a region where growers ship off their second best to the co-op and put their pride and joy in their own luxury bottles. You have to meet strict quality controls, of course. The Produttori is only devoted to quality-minded farmers with incredible terroir giving their all.

The winemaking is likewise next level. Aldo Vacca, the co-op’s general manager, is one of the wine world’s greatest artists. If you ever have the opportunity to meet and taste with him, take it; he is also one of the wine world’s great communicators.
