More about R. Pouillon

Fabrice Pouillon wanted to show me his vineyards: lush and verdant, –brimming with cover-crop over soils showing limestone mother rock right through the clay. If you’ve spent any time in Champagne, you will have seen row after row of compacted, chemmed-out, dead soils growing grapes destined for the industrial houses looking for quantity. It was a warm day in July 2014, my first visit to the cellar of Fabrice Pouillon in Mareuil-sur-Ay, and this was EXACTLY what I was hoping to find.

I believe where there is life in the vines there is life in the wines and after baking in the late morning sun, we put that to the test. tasting barrels in Fabrice’s cellar. His vins-claires were wines of extreme detail and tension, with strong mineral signatures and mind-bending length. Tasting his finished wines, it became clear that I was in the presence of a grower who was pushing for pinnacle quality. I was blown away and continue to be with each new release.

Today, Fabrice Pouillon has emerged as one of the most forward thinking ecologically minded growers in Champagne. His polycultural, low-till approach is a step beyond organic farming in the service of clearly capturing the voices of his individual terroirs. The wines are ripe, rich and detailed, the vin-claire often receiving extended élévage in large, neutral barrels.

The finished wines exhibit gorgeous tension between oxidation and cut, power and detail. Some say they are Sellosseian in style, I’ll let you decide for yourself, but what I can say with confidence is that these are among the most honest, delicious and soulful wines in Champagne today.
