Radikon Oslavje 2020 (1L)

$9999

Radikon stands alone: no one does it like this Friulian superstar. As Eric Asimov put it, these wines "astound for their purity, their distinctiveness and their almost radical evocation of a pre-modern age." Oslavje is the classic Radikon white blend, now Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc (Pinot Grigio was moved to a separate cuvée starting with the 2016 vintage), vinified together with about three months of skin contact and then years of aging in large neutral Slavonian oak botti. The vines grow on clay, marl, and limestone above the village of Oslavia, right against the Slovenian border, on parcels Stanko's grandfather planted and which have been farmed without synthetics since 1995, at yields of just 2.25 tons per acre. After Stanko died in 2016, his son Sasa, wife Suzana, and daughter Ivana have continued making the wine the way it has always been made. The 1L is Stanko's preferred format, designed for two people to share over a long meal. Powerful, sensual, and one of orange wine's defining statements.

"The 2020 Oslavje, a blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, displays a golden hue mixed with traces of copper. It wafts up from the glass with a richly enticing bouquet of crushed almonds, spiced blood orange and dried nectarines. Soothingly round, with a pretty inner sweetness, this displays ripe orchard fruits and hints of sour citrus as a cascade of inner florals amasses toward the close. Perfumed and exceptionally long, the Oslavje finishes with nuances of clove and candied ginger, leaving the palate aching for more. Gorgeous." —Eric Guido

"Originally conceived as a white blend labeled “Oslavje,” the 2020 O...... from Radikon reflects the estate’s long history of navigating naming restrictions, including limitations on the use of the village name itself. This 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from a selection of fruit across the estate’s roughly 24 hectares of vineyards. The wine undergoes about three months of skin maceration in oak casks, a duration that allows for deeper extraction while maintaining a notably supple texture that truly recalls soft grape skins. The result is a deep golden-colored wine with a citrus-tinged bouquet layered with mineral notes, alongside hints of orange peel and cedar driven largely by the Sauvignon component. On the Ponca soils of Oslavia—a friable mix of marl and sandstone that contributes both structure and salinity—this extended maceration gives a sensation of softness and breadth, with a perceived sweetness on the palate despite the wine finishing fully dry." —Monica Larner

More about Radikon

Stanko Radikon was a true icon of both the traditional wines and grapes of Friuli and of uncompromising, natural winemaking. The type of winemaking that Stanko begin implementing in 1995 wasn't new, it was actually a return to how his grandfather made wine.

Using extended macerations, or skin contact, with white grapes is now a global trend known to many as "orange wine", but this is indeed the tradition in certain regions including the Italian-Slovenian borderlands of Friuli. It was only in the second half of the 20th century that the region focused on more "international" styled wines, without skin contact and with fining and filtration.

After working alongside his father for a few years, Stanko abandoned this style, realizing that the local grapes benefited greatly from the traditional methods of his region. He also began bottling everything in specially designed 500ml and 1 liter bottles, as he preferred these for both serving and aging. This uncompromising approach was a tough sell as far as marketing is concerned, but Stanko didn't care.

His stubborn insistence on tradition and quality eventually paid off, and his wines and his estate are now revered around the world. Sadly Stanko succumbed to cancer in 2016 at the age of 62. His children, led by his son Saša, have taken the reigns and are continuing his legacy.

Saša has been deeply involved in the farming and winemaking for over a decade, and he is devoted to his father's philosophy. That said he is his own person, thoughtful and serious minded but also practical and, in the right mood quite funny.
